This afternoon, I tried to watch the late game, Dallas at Denver. There was a time when I never missed an NFL game in which Dallas was playing, but now it's nearly impossible for me to sit through one. The NFL as a whole has declined since free agency was implemented in its current form. When I started watching Cowboy games in the 70s, the team rosters were relatively stable, and it was easy to become familiar with the star players. Now, the stars move around so freely, I can't keep up with who's playing where.
The way the NFL is marketed on television also pisses me off. The trend towards cheapening the product started when Fox landed its first contracts to show the NFC games, and like Fox always does, designed its production and presentation to appeal to the lowest fucking common denominator audience. Lots of flashing lights, loud music, cyborgs dancing, players dancing. Generally, just a cheap, trashy, lowbrow approach that, unfortunately, the other networks try to imitate. As a rule, any product marketing intended to attract the 18-25 demographic will involve a lot of trashy special effects and irritating noise.
Since Dallas is an NFC team, most of their games are shown on Fox, so they already have two strikes against them right there. Then there's the Jerry Jones problem, which I've written about before and won't rehash again. I could probably put up with Fox and Jerry if Dallas was still a power player in the running for the Super Bowl every year, but they aren't. Finally, the straw that broke the camel's back --- I caught a shot of the Cowboy quarterback, Tony Romo, strolling the sideline with his baseball cap on backward. That punk shit won't get it.
