While checking highway travel conditions for my bro, I came across the term carpe diem, which is a Latin expression roughly meaning pluck the day. It generally refers to living for the moment and letting tomorrow take care of itself.
Speedo is all about carpe diem. During the Repub primary debates, when he was struggling in a deathmatch with Rudy Giuliani and Willard Romney, Speedo liked to talk about national security experience and how he, as a Senator, had it and someone who had been a mayor "for a short time" or a governor "for a short time" didn't have it. And when it came time to pick a VP, look who he chose. Spaylin's qualifications in no particular order: Anti-abortion, pro-gun, looks good in a short skirt. It seems like Speedo's goal is to finish out his life tooling around on Air Force One, and as for what happens after he's done, fuck it.
Trying to stay abreast of the political news these days is a lot like entering The Twilight Zone. By the way, have you noticed Spaylin looks good in a short skirt ?

Watch your back, Ace
A lot of middle-aged white American males are turned on by the idea of a nice-looking chick with a gun. If the election wasn't over before, it is now. The two-week ascent of Pentecostal Palin from Who Dat status to the hottest Repub on the planet is a clear indication the hardcore evangelunicals now own the GOP top to bottom and the movement of America toward theocracy will pick up speed. Ace has become an afterthought in the election, and at best he's merely the vehicle that will install the Pea one heartbeat from the Oval Office. The hunger for mooseburgers is amazing and is growing from one minute to the next; if Ace is smart, he'll be like Wild Bill and keep his back to the wall at all times.

Speculation
I've never cared much for stormwatching unless the storm in question was directly overhead, so I haven't spent much time trying to follow the news since last Friday. The one story that has held my interest somewhat is Ace's choice of Sweet Pea as his running mate. How did that particular woman end up on the ticket ? The internet's blazing with speculation, and what follows is a summary of a few theories that are circulating.
First theory: Ace wrapped up the GOP nomination months ago, and has had weeks of spare time to decide who he wants to run with. After all those weeks of careful deliberation, Sweet Pea was the name he came up with as the best possible VP nominee.
Second theory: Ace really wanted to run with one of his buddies, preferably Joe Lieberman. The powers-that-be in the Repub party told him to forget that shit; Ace got royally pissed off and chose Sweet Pea out of spite.
Third theory: The evangelunicals, who still flex muscle in the Republican Party, love Sweet Pea. She's one of them, after all, and checks out A+ on every one of their pet issues. The evangelunicals basically called Ace in, stood him at attention, and told him how it was gonna be. Ace made the announcement himself strictly as a formality.
Fourth theory: Ace still dreams about the good old days when everyone was calling him The Maverick, and made a wildass impulse pick just to stir up memories of how it used to feel.
If any of these theories is remotely credible, we've got a problem. The first theory casts doubt on Ace's judgment, the second and fourth cast doubt on his ability to behave calmly, intelligently, and rationally in pressure situations, and the third indicates that he doesn't have the guts to take on the religious conservatives. No good possibilities in the bunch. Suckitude on a massive scale.
Added 4:28 pm on 3 September: Of the four theories mentioned above, the one that seems probable to me is Number Three. Ace is not only chickenshit, he's gutless too.

Top Gun: A better leader than Jesus ?
Some of the discussion on the editorial blog at Dallas Morning News today is about the latest commercial spun out by Top Gun's campaign. The conservative thinks it's real cool, and the liberal thinks it borders on blasphemy. Anyone who feels like they need to see it can check it out here.
The basic premise is a continuation of the uppity N theme that's so popular these days, but carried to the Nth degree (That Uppity N- done think he's Jesus !). Some blog comments say it parodies the movie The Matrix, which I haven't seen and can't discuss.
After ridiculing Obama, the ad finally gets to the point: Obama's The Truth and The Way, BUT IS HE READY TO LEAD ?
So maybe what Ace is trying to tell us is that he'd be a better leader than Obama, and by extension, Jesus. Could that be possible ? Leadership implies a corresponding followership. Ace might think he's one hell of a leader, but if there's nobody following him, how good can he be ? Or let's say for the sake of argument that he has followers, but they're all conservatives of the semi-literate, beer belly, dim bulb variety. Sorry, Ace, but I'm not getting in that line. Start the parade without me, okay ?
