Desperados waiting for the train
In the early 1970s, I had just started to appreciate country music, largely because of Bob Dylan's album Nashville Skyline, and the excellent LP Sweetheart of the Rodeo by the Byrds. A buddy of mine bought an LP called The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy by some dude named David Allan Coe. This song was on it, and served as my introduction to Guy Clark, who wrote it. The best country songs paint word pictures, and this one is an example of what I mean. The violin when Coe sings, "Don't cry, Jack, it's only Jesus coming" never fails to break my heart.
