There are mornings when I wake up and feel relieved as I realize the world I was just dreaming about is not reality. Some of my dreams are so vivid I can remember segments of them long enough to write about them. When I saw the trailers for the new Leonardo DiCaprio dream movie Inception, I decided to watch it on a big screen, since dreams both mystify and fascinate me.
The movie is based upon a premise that technology has been developed which enables one person to infiltrate the dreams of another. As is often the case with new cutting edge technology, it's being used for purposes that, as Leonardo says, aren't strictly legal -- in this case, corporate espionage.
Inception is classic summer-movie eye candy, with plenty of spectacular special effects, chase scenes, and action sequences. Think of it as an imaginative blend of science fiction, heist caper, and psychological mystery. Since elapsed time in dreams is radically different from elapsed time in the real world, and since the movie involves the device of dreams within dreams within dreams, Inception can be disorienting, but in this genre that just adds to the entertainment value. I'll be surprised if Inception doesn't win most of the technical awards during next year's Oscar presentation. Rated an 8.0 and recommended for theater viewing.
