Tuesday matinee

This afternoon we saw the new George Clooney movie called The Ides of March. It's about politics, and the film's title suggests the direction in which the events in the story are headed. Clooney plays a governor running for the Democratic nomination in a presidential election, and at first glance he would seem to be the ideal candidate. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays his campaign manager, and Paul Giamatti plays the manager of a rival campaign. Ryan Gosling is an assistant strategist for Clooney's campaign, a talented idealist and a rising star in his profession. All four performances are excellent, and I recommend the movie to anyone who's cynical about the business of American politics.
