Some days are better than others, and yesterday was one of my better ones. I received an email from the county jury coordinator that all prospective jurors summoned to appear at the courthouse on Monday the 7th at 8:15 am were excused, and that our service was complete. I've had jury duty hanging over my head for six weeks, and now that burden has been lifted.
I loved jury duty when I was still working for the state. I made the cut in three criminal cases, one civil case, and one JP court traffic case. Plus, I served a term on the county grand jury. In those days, jury duty was like a paid vacation from the office, plus I got a good informal education in the workings of the legal system. Now that I'm not on a payroll, though, I consider jury duty an imposition I'd rather not be bothered with.
