Feedin' time

A reader of the Dallas Morning News opinion page responded to a letter about cuts in agriculture program funding with an opinion that food stamps should be issued on a sliding scale linked to the obesity of the applicant. Many Texans have shared his experience of waiting in line at the store while some lardass buys a boxcar full of groceries with the familiar little white debit card. I couldn't pass up a chance to stick in my own opinion as follows:

It's a blessing (or a curse, depending on your point of view) that participation in federal assistance programs such as food stamps is based on meeting specific uniform eligibility criteria, and whether one deserves assistance or not isn't among them. While I've also noticed the irony of a 300 lb. mama using her Lone Star card, my wiser side tells me that someday, I may be glad my own request for help was not evaluated too subjectively by a caseworker.
