Forcing square culture pegs into round holes

Today, I checked out the forum at http://www.texags.com/ to see what was happening in the world of A&M football, and came across a thread that captured my interest. It was devoted to haiku written about the upcoming A&M-Missouri game. Not the kind of thing you expect to find at an internet message board frequented by Texas Aggie football fans. Even more surprising was that some of the haiku were good. Or at least funny.

Later, I was at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ and Arianna had an entry including haiku she had written related to the American scene. Hers were creative, with the quality expected from a professional writer. She invited her blog readers to contribute haiku of their own.

I interpreted two encounters with haiku in one afternoon as a sign. Starting now, haiku will be the official art form of the pensights blog. I did a little research and learned that haiku is a Japanese poetic structure consisting of three lines of blank verse, with five syllables in the first and third lines, and seven in the second. There are various other haiku traditions that can be dispensed with. My first attempts, to give you an idea of what we're dealing with (employing the familiar pensights themes):

A nation drifting,

directed by a moron--
Their great misfortune.

or

Infinite secrets
and unchallenged decisions--
Someday it will end.

Foreign adventures

While seeking hegemony--
Not good ideas.

Finally-

Frozen confection,
or yet another failure ?
Ice cream is better.

If you think writing haiku is easy, you should think again. If you're up to it, add your own in the comments box. I'm becoming addicted, so haiku may appear on the other blog also. (Note: This post has been edited repeatedly to change or delete several haiku. FYI)
