Eejay's comment down below about the country's need for a viable third party was something I needed to think about. My initial reaction is that we'd be okay if the Democrats could just muscle up and be a viable second party. Control one branch of the federal government, executive or legislative, at all times. Serve as the loyal opposition and keep the Repubs from doing at least 75 percent of the nasty shit they want to do. From 1980 (Reagan's win) to 2000 (banjo's win), that was basically the role the Repubs played, and it worked out reasonably well for everyone except me (the only sumbitch in America who hated Reagan's guts).
Like eejay, I doubt there'll be a worthwhile third party before I shuffle off into the void. The ones that've been trying to get a foot in the door in my lifetime are even worse than the Dems when it comes to picking candidates: Perot and Nader spring immediately to mind, with Ron Paul having the potential to become another. Bloomberg bounced around the perimeter for a while as a credible choice, but he didn't get to be so rich by doing dumb shit, so he's staying out this time. Smart move, considering the turdpiles W is leaving on every rug in the house.
One final thought: It's a proven fact that 50 percent of the people who vote in this country are hopeless when it comes to choosing leaders, and personally, I think the percentage is higher. If they can't get it right when they only have two to choose from, think how bad things would be if there were three.
