Rewriting and reliving history ?

If things keep going as they currently are, I'll have to visit the library and check out some books on American history. The first thing I'll need to study is the 20th century history of the Great Depression, the Franklin Roosevelt administration, and the New Deal. Somewhere along the line, I was taught that FDR was elected to four consecutive presidential terms because of his enormous popularity after tackling the nation's economic problems in 1932. Now I'm learning all those things aren't true, and that FDR's policies really prolonged the depression rather than helping to end it. At least that's what I hear when I bother tuning in to AM radio and the afternoon conservative blabfests.

On the topic of revisiting history, I came across a January 2008 post at
this fascinating website. If there weren't enough things about Texas to piss me off, it seems like there's a nascent semi-libertarian, semi-conservative movement to pull Texas out of the union. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't someone already try that ? Did it work ?

I also read a post at
Bob Cesca's excellent blog about some conservative blowhards hinting the country may be headed for an armed revolution. Presumably, rightwing commentariat members tossing this idea into the mix aren't actually advocating such a thing, since I believe that would constitute treason. Still, I'll admit there might be something interesting about seeing people who rely on Limbaugh and Hannity for indoctrination start an armed insurrection against the U.S. government. In the long run, it could solve a lot of our problems. History says the first American revolution ultimately worked out pretty well, but that was in the days before the uniformed government troops had machine guns and stuff. This time, I wouldn't be putting money on the militia's chances.
