Since December I've been shopping at Amazon.com, an excellent source for music downloads in the MP3 format. I've started carrying a Sony Walkman when I'm out doing my three miles, and I have it loaded with MP3 music files from Amazon. One thing that appeals to me about Amazon is that I'm not charged any state sales tax on my purchases, making it less expensive to buy music via the internet than in a local store. My understanding is that a court decision several years ago exempted online retailers like Amazon from collecting sales tax in any states where they lacked a so-called "physical presence."
Now I'm seeing reports in the newspaper that Texas is among several states trying to force Amazon to collect sales taxes in an effort to reverse their budget shortfalls. In my book, this goes down as an attempt to increase my tax burden, which Republican tea-dium partiers were supposed to be against. Yeah, right.
