In the world conservatives live in, education = intelligence = elitism = bad. As a rule, the more recognition someone receives for scholarly achievement, the more despised he (or she) will be among right-wingers. Prime example being Paul Krugman, who has the unmitigated fucking gall to suggest that tax increases in addition to spending reductions would be a sensible approach to budget balancing.
