Day 118: No pity here, etc.

According to Mary's book, Donny Shunk knows he has never been loved.

Okay, my question is this:
  • Did being unloved cause Shunk to become a repulsive sociopath, or,
  • did the fact that he was a repulsive sociopath cause people not to love him?
Considering the enormous wealth that fell into his lap, isn't it possible that Shunk could've used a lot of it to produce good works that would've earned him the sincere admiration of many people? His "good works" (the "foundation" and the "university") were scams and rip-off operations that should have earned him some prison time, not trophies and blue ribbons. There are plenty of people who've overcome worse handicaps than being unpopular, but it usually required sacrifice and focus on things other than ego gratification.

Hullabaloo has a nice post about the love that Shunk now enjoys among the scum of the earth.
