I have no way of knowing for sure, but the way things are happening at the moment makes me believe Madam Speaker was wise enough to understand that if she stood tough against impeachment long enough, Donnie Donuts would eventually furnish the opening she wanted. He's a fucking dimwit, among other things.

Added 6:01 PM Thursday: Early opinion polls show a noticeable jump in public support for impeachment. Give Madam Speaker credit for realizing the idea of Russia rigging an election in the United States was a bridge too far for many voters, at least with the limited proof in the Mueller report.
